Using Biochar in Asphalt Mixtures
Biochar can be used to replace most of the filler material – tradionally fly ash from coal-fired power plants – and a small amount of the bitument in an asphalt mix. Asphalt is usually laid in three separate courses, a base course, a binding course and awearing course.

To give an example: a bi-directinal roadway in atown is 6.4m wide. It will require a base course that is 200mm thick, a binder course that is 60mm thick and a wearing course that is 40 mm thick giving a total depth of 300mm.
A cyclepath is 4.8m wide. It has abase course of 125mm, a binder course of 50mm and a waering course of 25mm, giving a total depth of 200mm.
Additonal Carbon savings can be achieved by usig recycled aggregate in the mixture and replacing some or all of the bitumen with a Biomass-derived alternative such as Linseed oil or heavy refinded Pyrolysis Bio-oil.

Replaces some of the filler (fly ash) and bitumen content, fewer indirect emissions.
